Rienzi Elementary

Parent Involvement Policy

School Year 2008-09

The Rienzi Elementary Parent Involvement Policy has been developed by the Title I Schoolwide Planning Committee, which includes staff members, parents, and community members.

The staff of Rienzi Elementary believes a critical dimension of effective schooling is parental involvement. In order to promote parental involvement, the staff at Rienzi Elementary will assist in the following ways to meet the state and federal requirements of Title I and "No Child Left Behind" legislation:

Teacher Goals and Responsibilities

Develop sound educational policies

Implement programs

Establish an effective evaluation process for those programs

Establish clear, concise expected learning results

Monitor results

Provide high quality instruction and resources

Provide timely information to parents and students

Distribution of Information

The Parent Involvement Policy for Rienzi Elementary will be posted in the school office, as well as on the school web site. A copy of this policy will be included in an Initial Information Packet sent home to parents at the beginning of each school year, or at the time of initial enrollment. It will also be included in the Alcorn District Title I Parent Handbook.

Information related to school and parent programs, meetings and other activities will be communicated in an understandable and uniform format through weekly notes and invitations sent home with students.

Classroom teachers will provide achievement test information during conferences, meetings, and printed information regarding a student’s performance on statewide testing will be sent home.

A Teacher-Student-Parent Compact which outlines how teachers, students, and parents will share in the responsibility for improved student achievement will be provided to parents. This compact will be communicated and explained to each school family at parent-teacher conferences.

Parent Participation

Parents will receive materials and have opportunities to participate in Literacy Nights planned throughout the year.

Parents will have opportunities to participate in school decisions made regarding the education of their child through an Open House, Parent Planning Committee, parent-teacher conferences, Annual Title I Evaluation Meeting, etc.

Barriers to parental participation, e.g. childcare, scheduling of meetings, etc., will be addressed based on individual needs and may be funded by Title I.

Parents will be encouraged to work jointly with the school to develop a school-parent compact.

The school will provide opportunities for conferences, as requested by parents, as well as teachers, to formulate suggestions and make decisions regarding the education of their children.

Within established parameters, parents are encouraged to observe instruction and other school activities that involve his/her child.

Parents are encouraged to volunteer and help at school in their child’s classroom and in Parent-Teacher-Children organization.

Meetings

Parents will be informed at the annual Open House of the school’s participation in the Title I program, the requirements of the program and their right to be involved.

Parent meetings and parenting seminars will be held at various times to meet the needs of families.

The school and family working together is a powerful force that can help students achieve the expected learning results of the school. We believe parental involvement has the greatest impact when parents, students, and the school share responsibility for the growth and development of each student.
