Admissions

Through the cooperation of the Vocational Division of the State Department of Education, the Alcorn Career & Technology Center has organized adult evening classes for the Spring Semester.  These classes are being conducted to provide training for persons so they may become gainfully employed and upgrade skills of those already employed.  Provided sufficient interest is shown, the above non-credit courses will be offered.  Any person 18 years of age or older and not enrolled in a high school curriculum is eligible to enroll in adult vocational education courses. 

Adult vocational courses are non-credit courses.  However, a certificate is issued upon the successful completion of each course.  A person missing more than 16% (1 class out of 6) will not be eligible for a certificate.  NOTE:  It is the responsibility of each person to maintain the certificate once issued.  The Alcorn Career & Technology Center does not keep a copy of the certificates issued.)

CEU CREDITS:

Continuing education units may be granted in approved classes by attending all sessions and completing all activities of the class.  Applications will be made available to participants.  All CEU credits will cost an additional $10.00 if a copy of transcript is needed.

FEES

Laboratory fees will be charged, but will vary depending on the nature of the course taken.  Fees must be paid on the date of registration.

Class Descriptions

 

 

Basic CNC Programming

             This class is designed as an introductory course to G & M code programming.  The course will include such CNC machine operational procedures as:  Manual Data Input; Data Saving; Program Editing; Setup Procedures; and Program Operation.  Basic G & M code commands and functions of each will be covered.  These objectives can be used on any CNC machine that uses basic G & M codes.

Advanced Photography

             This class is designed for improving the understanding of the basics of photography editing.  A general knowledge of the computer is needed.   (Example:  open programs, familiar with keyboard and mouse, and how to load CD’s)  Students will learn downloading, basic editing, changing brightness and contrast, editing color levels, using filters, correcting blemishes, and saving the finished product.

Basic Spanish (CEU credit)

             This class will provide employers and other individuals with Spanish language skills that are necessary for communication at the work place and in community activities.  The course will upgrade individuals’ skills in spoken and written Spanish.

Agriculture Mechanics

             This class is designed to give students instruction in MIG welding, stick welding, and practice running flat, vertical up, and fillet welding.  Plasma cutting is also covered.  Projects will be completed using skill as objectives are mastered.  Students will be allowed to repair farm equipment.

Cake Decorating

             Instruction is given in cake bases, basic frosting and coloring, tube uses, essentials in cake decorating, etc.

Combination Welding

             The objectives of this class are  to teach safety,  metal technology, methods of welding, shield gases, and arc welding (stick, MIG, TIG, processes).  Oxyacetylene cutting, welding, brazing, soldering, and maintenance/care of welding equipment is also emphasized.   

Instructors:  Virgil Jarnagin & Johnny Jarnagin     Fee:  $200.00 (2 nights per week / 16 weeks)

 


             Introduction to Computers

             This class is designed as an introductory course in computer application software.  It provides an introduction to computer concepts and the use of Microsoft Office Windows (Word processing, Spreadsheet, and Database operations).

Lawn/Garden Equipment Repair

             This class is designed to teach the operation, maintenance, and repair of lawn and garden equipment such as lawnmowers, power saws, motorcycles, outboards, power conveyers, etc.  Instruction will be given in basic principles of 2 or 4 cycle engine tune-up, cylinder reconditioning, pistons, piston rings, rod bearings and valves.

Medical Terminology

             This class will introduce the students to Medical Terminology and give them the skills needed to become employable in the medical field or a related field.

Advanced Computer Skills/IC3 Prep

             This class will train students in the basic fundamentals of Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheets), Access (databases), and Power Point (presentations) using Office software.  Students will learn to use features of the programs and have an opportunity to apply their skills by completing projects and prepare for IC3 certification.

Basic Photography Technology

             This class is designed for persons who have a desire to improve their understanding of photographic techniques and imaging.  Students learn how the camera works, how to improve the photograph, principles of light, lenses and their uses, film and introduction to digital.  The student must have access to a camera.

Basic Carpentry/Home Improvement

             This class will teach an understanding of  basic carpentry .  Instruction will be in safe use of wood working tools and techniques used to make minor home repairs.  Students will be allowed to construct projects approved by the instructor.

Clothing Construction/ Crafts

             The students will learn the basics of sewing machine use and its applications.   Students must provide their  own machine .  Students will learn the fundamentals of clothing construction, pattern selection and be allowed to construct items under the supervision of the instructor.

Teacher Assistant/Instructional Training

             The course is designed to train prospective assistant teachers/day care workers and others working with children how to  employ teaching strategies to meet their educational needs.  Students will  learn local policies and procedures, organization skills and use of teaching strategies for diverse learners.

Basic Heating and Air-Conditioning

             The course will give students the basic fundamentals of Heating and Air-Conditioning operation and trouble shooting.   The students will  use classroom and laboratory activities to understand how to troubleshoot HVAC problems.  The instructor will demonstrate  and explain the most common problems  found in HVAC units and the corrective actions needed to keep units operational.

Automotive Troubleshooting

             The course will introduce student to procedures and techniques needed to operate diagnostic equipment in automotive service.  Students will  be introduced to personal and equipment safety and shop procedures.
